(3) Images are evaluated by a board-certified retinal specialist.

(4) A diagnostic report and referral/screening plan is returned to Alpharetta and Cumming Internal Medicine the same day.

Now the doctors at Alpharetta and Cumming Internal Medicine can easily and accurately screen for diabetic retinopathy as part of their patient’s routine visit.

What is Diabetic Retinopathy?

Diabetes is a disease that affects the blood vessels throughout the body, particularly vessels in the kidneys and eyes. If sugar levels rise, damage to the retinal blood vessels may occur. This injury is known as diabetic retinopathy and is the leading cause of blindness in adults. A majority of people who have diabetes will develop diabetic retinopathy, but with the available medical treatments, only a small percentage of people will develop serious vision problems.
